In Memoriam: Peter Thonis
Since he first climbed Mt. Lafayette at age 11, Peter has hiked and loved the mountains of Franconia Notch. He has climbed every mountain in this area countless times, has enjoyed a view of these mountains from his home, and has introduced this special place to many friends and family. He has said that the Old Man of the Mountain watched over him through literally hundreds of climbs.
After the Old Man collapsed in 2003, a memorial park was constructed to commemorate this natural wonder. Nestled between Cannon Mountain and Mt Lafayette, it is in the heart of the area that Peter held so dear. A contribution to the Old Man Legacy Fund will help to maintain this area. And, for every $650 in our combined contributions, we will be able to inscribe a granite tile (paver) with a message to, or about, Peter, which will be visible to thousands of visitors every year.
